CD opens '98 session as members reiterate competing priorities
Article Abstract:
The UN Conference on Disarmament (CD) opened its first session for 1998 in Jan 20 following a faulty conference in 1997 which did not succeed in establishing an ad hoc committee to commence negotiations. The success of the CD relies on how its 61 members compromise on their conflicting interests for nuclear disarmament. It also depends on how the CD handles major areas of contention and concentrate on other issues, such as the comprehensive ban on anti-personnel landmines.
