Pain and pride in Mexico
Article Abstract:
Mexico experienced both extreme downturns and upturns in 1997. The first democratic elections since 1911 was conducted on Jul 6, 1997 and won by Pres Zedillo. It was also the first time that the Lower House of Congress was dominated by the opposition parties. In addition, Mexico realized macroeconomic stability that is expected to transform itself into microeconomic levels. At the same time, however, the country was experiencing violence committed against children and women while paramilitary groups roamed the countryside committing acts of terrorism.
