People power
Article Abstract:
The author discusses the history of globalization by briefly outlining the common trend over the last three centuries of establishing nation-state systems, these systems have been eroding with the encroachment of globalization, which has three apparent aspects: economic, public and popular movements. International corporations drive the global economy, often at the expense of the environment and labor rights, although some companies do respond to consumer demands for reform; non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations provide citizens a vehicle through which they can participate in the global economy, organizing protests using products of globalization such as the Internet and mass media; finally, problems such as pollution, diseases and global warming are international in scope and require functional cooperation in order to be addressed.
