Reform redux
Article Abstract:
Proponents of national health care reform should begin again with a fresh strategy, rather than succumbing to inaction or incremental reform. The new strategy should be simple, address both universal coverage and cost control, be clear on sources of funding, and consider a comprehensive plan that could be phased-in in stages. The strategy should draw on pro-reform elements among companies, physicians, and insurance companies, sectors generally assumed to be opponents of reform. Public opinion is still supportive of health care reform, and the political leadership should not abandon the issue.

The aftermath of defeat
Article Abstract:
State health care reforms may represent the only possible route that could still lead to adoption of a comprehensive national program. Such state reforms could prompt nationwide economic interests to call for intervention at the federal level. Otherwise, the opportunity for guaranteed health coverage for all US citizens seems to have passed, as a backlash has ensued in the wake of the failed reform effort. Cost cutting targeted at Medicare and Medicaid is probably the only reform likely to win support in a Republican-controlled Congress.

The misleading language of managed care
Article Abstract:
The argument that scholars should develop precise, neutral concepts with whichh to evaluate specific changes in medical reimbursement and shun industry-promoted slogans is made. These slogans are used mainly for self-promotion and are not analytical vehicles for an investigation. The rapid changes in American medical care call for precise terminology.
