Cambodia's fading hopes
Article Abstract:
Cambodia's transition toward stable democratic rule has been set back with the government's curtailment of press freedom, efforts to muzzle dissenting legislators in the 120-member Constituent Assembly and restrict the activities of human rights groups and student organizations. Cambodia's political elites should take seriously the mandate for democratization they received from the voters in the May 1993 elections if they want democracy to prosper in the country.

Thailand: toward democratic stability
Article Abstract:
Thailand has made great strides in its bid for democratic stability since May 1992, when General Suchinda Kraprayoon's military-backed government was toppled from power and the constitution was democratized. The peaceful transfer of power from Chuan Leekpai to Banhan Silpa-archa after the Jul. 1995 elections has been seen as another sign of democracy's consolidation in Thailand.
