Scandinavian realism
Article Abstract:
Peter Garpenby and Vibeke Erichsen's perceptions of Scandinavian health care reform clearly analyze the political realities and welfare policies of Sweden and Norway. Although both countries are responding to economic pressures by reducing spending, the basic welfare policies and assumptions behind the health care systems are not changing significantly. Scandinavian welfare policies and social idealism have always been driven by economic and political realism, facts overlooked by American critics.

Technology assembly in managed care
Article Abstract:
Medical technology assembly, the subject of Mita Giacomini's article precedes technology assessment and makes it possible. Assembly gives the dimensions along which technologies differ and distinguishes between them, giving the terms for the trade-offs that make up assessment and justify rationing. Giacomini claims that technology is socially contructed, and managed care enrollees can use this understanding to determine the real interests of their plans.

Apples, oranges, forests, and trees
Article Abstract:
Mita K Giacomini stresses the importance of the technology assessors in health care reform, but the key point is really to carry out the allocative decisions resulting from untutored demand and supply. The technology assessors should be left out of the picture for this other, key point.
