The CFE Treaty review conference: strengthening the 'cornerstone' of European security
Article Abstract:
Ambassador Thomas Graham, Jr., confirms that the US's goal at the review conference of the 1990 Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, to be held in Vienna, Austria, in May 1996, is to secure strong support for the continuation of the treaty. All its members, including Russia, support the treaty as a valuable security arrangement for Europe. The Middle East, Latin America, and South Asia are eager to have CFE-like regional security arrangements. From a political viewpoint, the expansion of NATO will have a significant impact on the modernization of the Treaty.
