The Internet in China: a new fantasy?
Article Abstract:
The number of Internet citizens in communist China has risen from 1.7 million to 16.9 million between July 1998 and July 2000, but those numbers are represented mainly by young, unmarried, educated males, indicating that the World Wide Web is reaching only a small portion of the Chinese population. Westerners believe that exposure to the exchange of ideas on the Web will lead to the demise of communism, but many supporters of communism are finding an outlet on the Web.
