The WTO and the political economy of globalization
Article Abstract:
The political implications of globalization and the role of the World Trade Organization in this process are examined. The globalization of the world economy continues to gain speed and while governments are forming a new world order to adjust to this development, the political consensus among countries remains volatile, especially in large countries. It is suggested that the realization of the political economy of global governance can be realized through a process of trial and error. The initial ministerial meeting of the WTO indicated that member governments were willing to accommodate the manifestations of globalization although at a gradual and cautious pace.

China's GATT membership: selected legal and political issues
Article Abstract:
A quick resolution of China's GATT membership dilemma is warranted because it would strengthen GATT, help to regulate Chinese trade, and help foster better relations between China and its neighbors. Both China and the contracting parties need to be flexible. Since China is only asking for resumption of membership, the other parties should agree to this and negotiate other issues later. The United States and other countries should reconsider punitive domestic legislation against Chinese trade. China, in turn, must accept the desire of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau to become GATT members.
