The changing economic complexion of Eastern Europe and Russia: results and lessons of the 1990s
Article Abstract:
The decade following 1989 has been a time of political and economic transition to liberal democracy and and a market economy for some of the former East-Bloc countries. Bold reforms in Poland, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary and some other former communist countries have eventually benefited these nations. For other states, however, the post-communist era has been a period of non-existent, tepid or failed reform. An analysis is presented of the disparate paths of economic transition in East-Central Europe and Russia, the role of the US government in these transitions and lessons they have for US policy in the future.

However, the development of xenophobia with democracy presents a threat to world peace and should be curbed before it leads to a third world war.
