Toward a new paradigm
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that less-developed countries need democracy, but that the democratic institutions and processes these countries can afford are limited. When seeking to promote democracy, donors must consider the cost much more than is the case at present, when many democratization programmes fail to take account of issues of affordability and long-term sustainability. Developments in the areas of civil society, elections and political parties are making democracy too expensive for less-developed countries to support alone.

Nationalism unbound: the horn of Africa revisited
Article Abstract:
Nationalism and the commitment to Marxism-Leninism of Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia became significant in the 1970s and the 1980s. The nationalism of Eritrea was characterized by its struggle for independence. Ethnic nationalism prevailed in Ethiopia. In Somalia, the tendency was toward micronationalism. These three varieties of nationalism are viewed as models for the evolution of African nationalism.
