The false dawn
Article Abstract:
Derailment in Indonesia has been shorter, but painful. The historical processes began with Presdient Sukarno's political philosophy of 'Guided Democracy' beginningin 1959 through the collapse of President Suharto's 'New Order' in 1998. Political and constutional changes, such as multi-party democracy, were begun and stalled. Interim president B.J. Habibie appears to have Indonesia headed again toward reform.

Saving democracy: Indonesia
Article Abstract:
The parliamentary polling and the election of president and vice-president between president Megawati Sukarnoputri and president Suharto's regime are discussed. The study predicts that Indonesia may run by a coalition of the remnants of Suharto's regime and conservative Islamic parties, and that the election results are unlikely to enhance democracy.
