Upheaval in Israel
Article Abstract:
Labour Party leader Yitzhak Rabin's victory in the 1992 elections in Israel has been followed by a warming of American-Israeli relations, a restarting of the Middle East peace talks and a halt to housing starts in the West Bank, but it is still too early to know whether this momentum will result in permanent change. Israel always functions by coalition government. Rabin's attempt to form a left-wing coalition foundered and he formed one with Shas, the Torah Observing Sephardim. Rabin has so far gotten along with Shas although they disapprove of Shulamit Aloni, his left-wing Education Minister.

Squall hits 'Year of Cyprus.'
Article Abstract:
Cyprus continues to be a country rife with political tensions. The Greek Cypriots feel they have conceded enough, having abandoned their traditional ideal of union with Greece and agreed that a redefined Northern Cyprus should be Turkish. They accuse the Turkish Cypriots of not making a comparable concession, and substantial Turkish immigration from the mainland has not alleviated tensions. Economically speaking, the southern part of Cyprus is a good candidate for European Union membership, but the Cypriot political controversy must be resolved first.

Murder at Canary Wharf
Article Abstract:
The problems of Northern Ireland continue. On Feb 9, 1996, the IRA announced a ceasefire in its war for a united Ireland. Within hours, a bomb for which the IRA's Southern Command took credit exploded at London's Canary Wharf office development. Ireland's conflict had become more urgent and more complex. Moreover, Ireland's conference of the political parties, the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation, has so far not reached a political settlement of the Irish conflict.
