The increase of single parent families: an examination of causes
Article Abstract:
Three theories which explain the sizable increase in the number of single parent families are examined. The increase is attributed to liberal welfare policy, the significant incarceration and unemployment levels of African American males and changes in sexual attitudes. Various data on welfare expenditures, changes in male and female employment rates, attitudes toward abortion and other demographic data are scrutinized. It is concluded that policy remedies which tend to lessen the incidence of single parent families should be implemented. These are policies which reduce young male unemployment and those which lessen welfare dependence at the national and state levels.

Russian oil, Western investment: putting the puzzle together
Article Abstract:
Russia's wealth in petroleum resources will be key in its development of a market economy, and foreign investment will be key in this development. Problems for foreign investors in addition to the unstable political situation include the inadequate risk-sharing mechanisms and the danger of spreading resources too thinly. Progress can be made in small increments by creating showcases or enterprise zones showing the positive results of international cooperation. International financial institutions can also help by relaxing the terms of loans to Russia.
