The hybrid regimes of Central America
Article Abstract:
There has been a major shift towards democracy as a form of government in the countries of Central America since the 1980s, but democracy is still tenuous in the region due to many factors. All five Central American countries are under civilian rule with the leaders coming to power through elections. The extremely poor condition of these countries and the continuing civil strife before the democratic transition make the changes even more significant. However, scholars are a little skeptical about the changes. The future of democracy in Central America is discussed.

The transformation of central Europe
Article Abstract:
Central European societies paid a price for their struggle for freedom but in 1989 Poles chose dialogue rather than confrontation as a way of overcoming political deadlock. The negotiated revolution marked the end of the struggle against communism. The notion of Central Europe is mostly associated with rapid economic and social transformation, and Poland has laid the foundation for a stable free market economy over the past 10 years.

Bowling alone: America's declining social capital
Article Abstract:
The consolidation of democracy is facilitated by a strong and active civil society characterized by social networks. In the US, there has been a marginal decline over the decades in membership in church-related groups, labor unions, parent-teacher associations, traditional women's groups, Boy Scouts and the Red Cross, which may have led to democratic disarray.
