The interdependece of political and economic reforms in Mexico
Article Abstract:
The highly successful economic reform process initiated by Mexico's former Pres Carlos Salinas de Gotari led to democratization of the country's political system, which in turn paved the way for more economic reforms. Salinas was forced to introduce political changes to ensure the success of his economic reforms, while his free trade agreement with the US in June 1990 necessitated opening the political system to accommodate democratic groups. However, the democratic transformation of Mexico is incomplete since the much needed judicial reforms are yet to be initiated.

Democracy: democratization in federal systems
Article Abstract:
A comparison is presented on two different paths to democratization, self-determination, or the splitting of a unified country into several separate countries such as the former Soviet Union, and unification, or the bringing together of separate but similar countries, such as Germany. The author also examines internal divisiveness, such as Canada, and evaluates win-win, win-lose and zero-sum typologies for assessing levels of democratization.

Prosperity: the political economy of foreign assistance
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on the role of foreign aid institutions in fostering political reform in developing countries. The author posits that because development is commonly viewed as a top-down instead of a bottom-up process, reforms promoted by economic policy are not often successful, and that reforms should target the grassroots level instead.
