Nigeria: elections in a fragile regime

The first civilian run elections in Nigeria was embroiled in disarray, misconduct and confrontation, rousing worrisome echoes of earlier failures. This crisis-ridden regime continues to face major hurdles to consolidation amid a setting made volatile by elite contention, social polarization, institutional dysfunction and economic malaise.

The different possible purposes of electoral systems are discussed. The nature of electoral system is to aggregate the preferences of voters and to convert them into electoral results.
