The unintended consequences of trade adjustment assistance
Article Abstract:
Trade adjustment assistance (TAA) diminishes the benefits garnered from trade liberalization policies. The TAA aims to compensate local industries that suffer from increased competition from foreign enterprises. This compensation may, however, encourage firms to close shop even though they are not suffering losses. Also, firms which are not competitive due to inefficiency stand to benefit the most from this policy. While this policy was originally formulated to win over dissenting voices to free trade, it also potentially nullifies the expected benefits from trade liberalization.

Competitive markets for electricity generation
Article Abstract:
Technological and economical knowledge make it possible to substitute state ownership of electricity generation with a competitive market. The competitive market has several advantages over regulated ones, as is evident from experiences in several countries including Brazil, the U.S., and the U.K. Benefits include a reduced cost of production, lower prices per unit, and greater consumer satisfaction with prompt services. Significant saving is possible through economizing on meeting peak-load demand.
