Thoughts on modern tourism: a traveller in St. Petersburg
Article Abstract:
There is still considerable material hardship in St Petersburg, Russia. Much of the city's infrastructure is in a very poor state of repair, and many people live in very cramped conditions. In contrast, significant public buildings, particularly those that attract tourists, are in good condition or are being repaired. The city has many attractive, well-dressed young women, and there are many signs of pro-Western habits and preferences. The influence of officialdom seems to have diminished, and visitors to Russia no longer expose themselves to the danger of political menace.
