Article Abstract:
A study on the influence of Islam on the hip-hop culture in the United States is conducted. Islam gave a sense of identity to the under-classed and the old school rap is flavored with references to Islam and there are different 'Islams' represented in hip-hop as seen in the friction between the Sunni Muslims and The Five Percenters.

Todd Boyd talks about his book, The New H.N.I.C.: the Death of Civil Rights and the Reign of Hip Hop and compares the two movements. He maintains that the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement is still alive in the Hip Hop generation but it takes a different form and the ideas and motivation are distinct.

Hip-Hop music as a legitimate cultural and literary form is upheld and defended against a new breed of intellectual African Americans who criticize it. Seventy-five colleges throughout the United States either include Hip-Hop as a course or incorporate it as part of a course.
