Organising the only game in town
Article Abstract:
The first meeting of the newly formed World Trade Organization (WTO), which is set for Singapore in Dec 1996, should be viewed as a ceremonial gathering to celebrate the founding of the WTO, not as a working meeting geared to discuss actual economic issues. Contention between developing countries and the industrial nations should be avoided in Singapore. The WTO should concentrate on establishing the meeting process. Discussion of the concrete issues facing the WTO, such as protecting the global environment, freeing the flow of investment capital and guaranteeing fair treatment of labor, can wait until the next meeting.

Yeltsin's foreign policy - a third-world critique
Article Abstract:
Boris Yeltsin's foreign policy is a flawed one without a basis in real national interests but rather a rejection of USSR policies. There is some resemblance to the Gorbachev regime's latter day policy in which the country came to see itself as a regional power rather than a superpower and disengaged itself from non-European matters. The policy is driven not by a desire to make a moral statement but by a willingness to barter former Third-World allies for Western, especially American, economic aid.

A cure for the woes
Article Abstract:
Volatile and inefficient international financial markets are threatening to cause a dramatic global depression if not controlled by the establishment of a World Financial Authority. Problems with these markets stem from weak domestic regulations and high risk for liquidity crisis. An international banking authority is needed to set regulatory standards, impartially assess states' capital inflows, and help stabilize vulnerable economies.
