What is democratic consolidation?
Article Abstract:
The introduction of global democratization during the past quarter-century has transformed over 60 countries worldwide from authoritarian rule to a democratic regime. Democratic consolidation is presented as a tool to secure new democracies and protect them against the threat of authoritarian regression. However, several problems caused by democratic consolidation have surfaced. These include the diffusion of democratic values, civilian supremacy over military rule, party building and the decentralization of state power.
