A developmental social psychology of identity: understanding the person-in-context

Article Abstract:

The socialization of identity formation involves the processes of imitation and identification during childhood. Identity formation during adolescence is characterized by dialectic processes. Social experiences help in the formation of self. Identity transformation involves mechanisms of self-focusing and self-awareness that arise due to incongruent feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Differentiation and integration decrease incongruence. Each transformation leads the real and the ideal self. A set of propositions about adolescent identity formation are provided.

Do I matter? Construct validation of adolescents' perceived mattering to parents and friends

Article Abstract:

Adolescents base a great deal of their self-worth on the idea that they matter to someone. An empirical study is described that examines the correlation between the feeling of mattering to friends and family and self-valuation.
