The distinction between type 1 and type 2 batterers - further considerations
Article Abstract:
The research of J.M. Gottman and colleagues on male batterers is analyzed. Gottman's type 1 batters are more violent than type 2 batterers. Type 2 batterers may have experienced unilateral husband-to-wife violence in their family. The rate of heart beat decreases in type 1 during violence and increases in type 2's. The paper discusses political, clinical and research implications of Gottman's work.

What do we know about typologies of batterers?
Article Abstract:
A typology of male batterers based on differences in heart rate reactivity during marital violence by J.M. Gottman and colleagues is presented along with the limitations of the psychophysiological and marital affect data of their scheme. An alternative interpretation based on methodological and conceptual premises of their study is also discussed.
