Adolescents and smoking: evidence from France and Spain
Article Abstract:
Changing the smoking habits of young people in Spain and France is a difficult task. French teenagers are greatly influenced by their peers and this is especially true of very young girls. There is also a mild correlation between smoking and social class. There is a lack of good data on Spanish adolescents' smoking habits but generally the incidence of smoking is high and anti-smoking policies are ineffective because of a lack of health education. People are unaware of the health risks involved. Young people are more likely to smoke if their parents and friends also smoke.

Suicidal ideation and acts of self-harm among Dublin school children
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the rate and pattern of suicidal thinking in a randomly-selected group of 13-14-year-old schoolchildren in Dublin, Ireland. Forty-four per cent of the group of 88 children said in the screening questionnaire that they had had some form of suicidal thoughts during the previous year. This rate reduced to 29% at the home interview. Reported self-harm rates were 8% at screening and 2% at home interview. The children felt that suicidal thoughts were common amongst adolescents and that suicide was an acceptable way of addressing problems.
