An experimental test of the relationship between self-esteem and concern about body shape and weight in restrained eaters
Article Abstract:
A subliminal lexical decision task has been used to assess whether overconcern with body shape and weight is linked with self-esteem in high restrained eaters. It was established that low levels of self-esteem and concern about body shape and weight are connected in these people. It was not found, however, that the group of high restrained eaters primed with low self-esteem had shorter reaction times on shape and weight words in the supraliminal lexical decision tasks. It appears that the automatic, nonconscious processing of body shape and weight words was influenced in primed high restrained eaters, but the strategic, conscious processing was not.

Weight concern across the life-span: relationship to self-esteem and feminist identity
Article Abstract:
Women's concerns about weight tend to decline slightly after the age of around 40. This may be the time when women can no longer present themselves as young or when they cease to attempt to attract men. In research among 180 women aged between 18 and 60 in Adelaide, Australia, global self-esteem remained almost unchanged across the age range. However, the link with weight concern changed, as a negative relationship was only found in the two middle-aged groups.
