Children in the criminal justice and secure care systems: how their mental health needs are met
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the perceptions of service providers on the mental health needs of adolescents considered for secure placement using 1996 data from the departments of child and adolescent psychiatry, children's social services, youth justice, probation, secure units and young offender institutions in England and Wales. Results demonstrated that highly disturbed young people's mental health needs are not well recognized, understood or adequately met. The availability of levels and types of expertise and resources was limited across all agencies.

Adolescents who murder
Article Abstract:
The families of 20 adolescent murderers from England and Wales have histories of mental illness and family violence. Most of the murderers have violent fathers and have been violently abused since childhood. Almost one-third have been sexually abused. Drug abuse is common among the teenaged murderers. Adolescents, especially sex offenders, use more violence than adult offenders. Behavioral psychotherapy with non-verbal therapy, ideal role models, and educational and vocational training can help vent to the hostile motives of the abused adolescents.
