Chimpanzees: joint visual attention
Article Abstract:
Gaze following activity in both human beings and chimpanzees are carried out in identical fashion. Gaze following develops in chimpanzees at the age of 5 years, just as in human infants. Chimpanzees exhibit gaze following in response to both coordinated head and eye movements, as well as eye movement alone. Chimpanzees can follow the gaze into the space, away from the visual field and can perceive the ability of opaque objects to obstruct their line of sight. Predation risks or competition for mates may be responsible for the evolution of this ability.

Infant macaque monkeys respond to pictorial depth
Article Abstract:
The results of a pioneering study of pictorial depth perception in a nonhuman primate species are presented. Two experiments involving pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) infants are conducted to test their response to pictorial depth cues of texture gradient/linear perspective and relative size. Test results show that infant macaques are sensitive to pictorial depth information. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Rotation of mental images in baboons when the visual input is directed to the left cerebral hemisphere
Article Abstract:
The mental rotation forvisual imagery phenomenon is tested in baboons and humans using a video-formatted matching-to-sample task. While the phenomenon was found to exist in both baboons and humans, the effect for the former is limited to conditions in which visual input was directed to the right visual half-field. The study provides the first evidence of mental rotation in a nonhuman species.
