Article Abstract:
Human motivation may either be pragmatic or non-pragmatic. Some children may perform an intellectual activity without minding the reaction of important adults around them. Others may have a more pragmatic evaluation of such activity to gain adult approval or avoid adult disapproval. Children prodded by the non-pragmatic appreciation of intellectual activity are mastery-oriented and do not associate performance with adult criticism.
