Conceptualizing the role of self-esteem in the burnout process
Article Abstract:
The role of self-esteem in employee burnout is examined in separate samples consisting of 1,163 police officers and 494 hospital workers. The influence of self-esteem as a precursor, moderator, and product of burnout was studied. A distinct negative relationship between self-respect and burnout was observed. The study indicates the use of self-esteem as a good indicator in the analysis of potential burnout victims. This study takes research on employee burnout a step further by providing dimension and phase scores in the measurement of burnout. The dimension most strongly related to self-esteem, and exhibiting the most defined male-female variations, was emotional exhaustion.

Organization development in Italy
Article Abstract:
Organization development (OD) has a long way to go to achieve acceptance in Italy because it is an 'American' concept that has had trouble meshing with Italian culture, politics, economics, and other aspects of Italian life. There are indications it could succeed there with time. There is strong Italian interest in OD. Italian OD consultants are starting to do a better job of customizing OD practices to suit Italian needs. A formal method of teaching OD in schools or in business establishments must be found. OD practitioners must help with change management, technological innovation, and human resources reallocation.
