Death and life in a great American city
Article Abstract:
This article examines the social, economic, and health conditions in the poorest neighborhoods of New York City. Urban renewal programs and prosperity in neighboring communities have concentrated poverty into inner city ghettos resulting in a decline in public health, limited access to health services, and increased marginalization of the community.

An anthropological perspective on the city and mental health
Article Abstract:
This article examines the availability of public mental health services to the poor and mentally ill residents of New York City. Managed care organizations, declines in the availability of urban living space, and government restrictions on needs-based assistance often prevent the poor from obtaining necessary clinical treatment.
