Mental health services in New York City
Article Abstract:
The community-based public mental health services of New York City have faced the challenge of treating deinstitutionalized psychiatric patients for over fifty years. Reinvestment legislation passed in 1993 provided greater resources and state funding to improve the overburdened outpatient and emergency services and develop new self-help and advocacy programs.

Historical perspectives on New York City health
Article Abstract:
This article presents an overview of public health and social conditions in New York City during the nineteenth century. Population increases, immigration, poor living conditions, and new occupational health hazards created an influx in infectious diseases and resulted in the establishment of the Department of Health.

Epidemiological perspectives on the health of New York City
Article Abstract:
This article uses an epidemiological approach to examine the health status and well-being of New York City residents. Statistics on infant mortality, life expectancy, poverty, and mental illness are included to provide insight into public health in New York City.
