Development and evaluation of the McKnight Risk Factor Survey for assessing potential risk and protective factors for disordered eating in preadolescent and adolescent girls
Article Abstract:
Anorexia nervosa is the third most common chronic condition amongst adolescent girls in the US. A study found that eating problems in early childhood are predictive of more severe eating problems during adolescence. The McKnight Risk Factor Survey (MRFS-III) has been developed to assess risk and protective factors for eating problems in pre-adolescent and adolescent girls. Test-retest reliabilities for the MRFS-III scales are discussed and were found to be high throughout all age groups. However the relatively small size of the elementary sample limits the study somewhat.

Factors associated with weight concerns in adolescent girls
Article Abstract:
The relationship between weight concerns in adolescent girls and potential risk factors for partial and full syndrome eating disorders was examined. A self-report survey was administered to 103 elementary and middle school students in Arizona and California to analyze the association. Results show that the importance put by peers on weight and eating was the strongest predictor of excessive weight concerns. Other factors associated with weight concerns in teenage girls include self-confidence, being teased about weight and parents' concern with thinness.

The spectrum of eating disturbances
Article Abstract:
The existence of partial syndrome eating disorders among nonclinical populations is almost double that of full-syndrome eating disorders. In addition, eating disorders increase steadily in some individuals. A thorough investigation of the risk factors of the eating disorders is necessary for both children and adults. The identification of the risk factors of eating disorders helps in the treatment of the disease. Girls suffer more from eating disorder as compared to boys.
