Effectiveness of the MMPI-2 validity indicators in the detection of defensive responding in clinical and nonclinical samples
Article Abstract:
Some individuals undergoing psychological assessment conceal or otherwise minimize psychopathology, and studies have been undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) validity scales to detect fake-good responses. A further study of patients with schizophrenia, who had already completed the MMPI-2 with honest responses, were asked to complete it again, only with symptoms concealed. Patients could produce clinical profiles that were much less pathological, and the Edwards Social Desirability Scale and the L scale were used in determining fake-good and honest profiles in the patients.

Defensive responding on the MMPI-2 in family custody and access evaluations
Article Abstract:
Research on defensive underreporting by parents involved in legal action over custody used the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. The Superlative (S) scale and the Wiggins Social Desirability (WSD) scale were used to calculate a composite score, by which measurement 74% of the parents were classified as underreporting. Traditional Lie and Correction criterion found only 52% underreporting, and this traditional method is seen as less useful than the WSD-S criterion. Parents classified as underreporters had similar clinical scale profiles to parents classified as nonunderreporters, whichever criterion was used.

Relative effectiveness of the standard validity scales in detecting fake-bad and fake-good responding: replication and extension
Article Abstract:
Usage of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 in psychological assessments of 129 patients of both sexes revealed the utility of this instrument in efficiently distinguishing between fake bad, fake good and actual mental health of the subjects. The Infrequency scale was best for identifying faking bad, the Obvious-Subtle Scale Positive Malingering and Lie scales proved effective in detecting good fakes.
