Empirical and theoretical considerations of empathy in sex offenders
Article Abstract:
Sex offender treatment programs try to teach empathy without distinguishing self-oriented and other-oriented empathy and without providing tools to measure change. Sex offenders must become capable of other-oriented empathy in order to change. Workshops on shame and how it affects self-awareness are also needed for therapists who work with this population, as the therapists need to understand how self-oriented shame is. Research on the existing empathy scales and whether they measure self-oriented and other-oriented empathy accurately is needed, as is research on empathy development generally.

Therapeutic jurisprudence and the sentencing of sexual offenders in Canada
Article Abstract:
The article contends that further changes could be introduced to facilitate the treatment of Canadian sex offenders, and that the perspective of therapeutic jurisprudence should drive these changes. The changes recommended include long-term community supervision after imprisonment and mandated treatment for sexually abusive behavior. The recommended changes are considered in the light of the legal challenges which could be made.
