Female or male therapists for women with eating disorders? A pilot study of experts' opinions
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the patient characteristics that clinicians consider as bases for deciding whether an eating-disordered client should be assigned a male or female therapist. Twenty-seven clinicians participated in the study. The results indicate that a female therapist is more likely to be preferred if the client has body image issues, an overprotective mother and a history of paternal abuse. Other findings are discussed.
