Fighting for health care on the hill: a tale of a senator, a psychologist, and the American people
Article Abstract:
Sen Bill Bradley and a psychologist, with the support of the American people, were responsible for the passage of the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act in 1996. The legislation was prompted by the conditions of mothers and their newborns who were pushed out of hospitals immediately after childbirth by managed care policies. While Sen Bradley negotiated in Congress for the passage of the bill, the psychologist was responsible for wording in such a manner that it reflected the health care needs of society. The bill was passed with a 99-0 vote on Sep 5, 1996.
