Genetic strategies for clarifying a nosology of relational distress
Article Abstract:
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) can be improved with the addition of relationship descriptions. Data on family relationships, that is, relationships between individuals in the same generation and those between members in different generations, can be included in genetic analyses, to help clarify how these relationships become part of the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, and improve diagnostic classification and assessment in a nosology more suited to etiological process.

Relational diagnosis-a brief historical overview: Comment on the special section
Article Abstract:
The background of the historical efforts undertaken since the late 1970s to demonstrate the significance of relational interaction and dysfunction to the mental health field is provided and possibilities for greater inclusion of relational disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-V (DSM-V) are suggested. Greater acceptance of a classification of couple and family dysfunction in the mental health professions is also expected.
