Guest editorial: a personal position on the treatment of individuals who commit sexual offenses
Article Abstract:
The treatment of sex offenders carries with it a tension between the care of the offender and the duty to keep society safe. This tension can appear in selecting a mode of treatment and in the government's frequent desire to withhold resources from such programs. Confrontational therapy can seem appropriate to offenders but makes little psychological sense and can even hurt. Motivational therapy strives to develop in the offender the desire to change and keeps control with the offender rather than with an agent such as the criminal justice system. This approach is more in line with the purpose of therapy.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy with an incarcerated exhibitionist
Article Abstract:
Successful cognitive-behavioral treatment of an exhibitionist in prison provides some reason for optimism about the efficacy of this approach. Exhibitionism is a frequent offense, but accounts of this disorder's successful treatment are limited. The therapy focused on insight, improved communication and enhancement of the social network. Deviant sex fantasies were discouraged, while more appropriate ones were encouraged. Phallometric data showed an increase in appropriate arousal and less deviant responses.
