Habituation of the orienting response to stimuli of different functional values in 4-month-old infants
Article Abstract:
Stimuli with eliciting, signaling, and reinforcing functional values produce different orienting responses (ORs) and OR habituation in visual attention among four-month-old infants. OR is elicited by the sudden presentation of a stimulus. The isolation of the eliciting function of the stimulus decreases ORs and produces OR habituation. The isolated signaling function of the stimulus increases OR elicitation. OR habituation, attention recovery, and dishabituation are determined by stimulus complexity if the signaling function is excluded.

A competition model of exogenous orienting in 3.5-month-old infants
Article Abstract:
Sensitivity and attention to movement of 3.5-month-old infants are influenced by the spatial distribution and colors of objects in the visual field. This finding summarizes major results of four experiments on exogenous or stimulus-driven orienting. A display consisting of a small moving bar incorporated in a field of static bars was utilized to determine the sensitivity of the infant to the stimulus.
