Individual difference variables that predict response to training in phonological awareness
Article Abstract:
Kindergarten children with low achievement in reading show individual differences in response to training in phonological awareness, and several cognitive variables can predict these differences in growth. The ability to spell nonwords and the general verbal ability predict the growth of explicit analytic or segmenting skills. Spelling nonwords and rapid automatic naming of digits predict the growth in synthetic awareness or blending skills. Implications for children with reading problems are discussed.
