International perspectives on youth unemployment and mental health: some central issues
Article Abstract:
Research on unemployment and youth in the 1990s echoes work carried out in the 1930s. There are similar concerns about dependence on parents, loss of motivation and concern about dead-end jobs. Research carried out in the 1990s shows that dissatisfaction with jobs can affect mental health, as well as unemployment. Young unemployed people may attract more attention than middle-aged unemployed people, due to being more visible, and there may be fears about unemployment and crime among young people. Yet young people show high levels of commitment to work which tend to be linked to depression due to not obtaining work.

Youth unemployment and psychological distress in the Republic of Ireland
Article Abstract:
Unemployment causes distress among young people in Ireland and this is linked to a sense of loss of control and fatalism. Unemployed youths from working class backgrounds tend to be more affected by fatalism. Commitment to a work ethic increases distress, while interventions helping to increase a sense of personal control help to reduce distress. Young unemployed people tend to follow general norms in society rather than developing a subculture of their own to protect themselves.
