The article examines the manipulation of a patient's "awareness context" as a means of achieving patient compliance in the clinical setting. Discussion includes the impact of this practice on patients' understandings regarding their formal legal status.

Violence and abuse in psychiatric in-patient institutions: a South African perspective
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that hospitalized mental health patients in South Africa continue to experience abuse and violence 10 years after the Department of Health prioritized improvements in care and deinstitutionalization. Implications are discussed.

The narrative structure of psychiatric reports

Five codes are used to analyze psychiatric expertise: referential, symbolic, semantic, proairetic, and hermenutical, drawn from the work of Roland Barthes. These are assessed with regard to lapsus calami; implications are discussed.
