Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum, M.D.: 1828-1899
Article Abstract:
It is only now that 19th-century psychiatrist Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum is being given the recognition that he deserves. Kahlbaum created the modern concept of mental illness based on symptomatic patterns and associated features. He originated the Bonhoeffer program and was the first to distinguish between psychoses with and without organic causes. He also made new words for symptoms and syndromes such as paraphrenia, dysthymia, cyclothymia and hebephrenia.
