Mathematics anxiety and science careers among able college women
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted in a women's college to determine if there exists a correlation between women's attitude towards math and their choice of career. A questionnaire which consisted of career interest questions and math attitude items was administered to incoming freshmen batches in 1985, 1986 and 1987. Results showed a high correlation between math confidence and choice of a physical science career. On the other hand, previous knowledge in math proved to be insignificant. These results point to the importance of cultivating positive attitudes towards mathematics learning.

Numerical cognition: loci of ability differences comparing children from China and the United States
Article Abstract:
A study to determine the reasons for the differences of Chinese and American schoolchildren in mathematics was constructed. The subjects of the study were 28 first-graders from Hangzou, China and 24 first-graders from Columbia, Missouri. The results indicated that the Chinese sample had more mature problem solving strategies comparable to fourth- or fifth-grade American schoolchildren, which denotes a greater understanding of the principle of numbers.

Counting knowledge and skill in cognitive addition: a comparison of normal and mathematically disabled children
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted among normal and mathematically disabled (MD) children to determine the relationship between counting knowledge and computational skills. Results show that MD children had inadequate counting ability and lack of skills in detecting counting errors. These disabilities contributed to their poor performance in the addition task. These results imply that different factors affect MD children's computational and retrieval deficiencies.
