Meeting the needs of children in poverty
Article Abstract:
Children need to be exposed to a nurturing environment that is conducive to their development. Poor children, in particular, need to have an early childhood environment that allows them to grow to their full potential. It was for this reason that Project Head Start was devised. Since the launching of the first Head Start program in 1965, millions of less fortunate children have been helped, proving in the process that the idea of early intervention is a valid one. Today, there are several other growing programs that have launched, all of which deserve the public's support.

Reinstituting the White House Conference on Children
Article Abstract:
The urgency of the need for a White House Conference on Children, a three to four-day meeting that addressed policy issues concerning children which was last held in 1970, is stressed. The call is made in view of the many challenges that families confront in the present times, such as child abuse, insufficient health care, impropernutrition, family stress and academic failure. A White House Conference in the 1990s must also emphasize prevention and the encouragement of optimal development and mental health.

Young children in poverty: facing the facts
Article Abstract:
The National Center for Children in Poverty has reported that the number of children living at the poverty level has increased to five million in 1992. These children compose 25% of the number of children between one and six, and live in families which are poor despite having at least one parent with a job. Four million other children live in conditions near the poverty level. These statistics argue for increased welfare and for solutions that would raise the distribution of wealth among US families.
