Intertemporal framing issues in management compensation
Article Abstract:
Manager-decisionmakers' expectations about incentive compensation and their perception of economic uncertainty affect their investment decisions. The impact of the two factors on investment decisions is particularly evident when they also affect decisionmakers' implied discount rates. Findings indicate that in some cases, penalty incentive plans may be more effective in inducing investment than bonus provisions. They also suggest that an organization's financial control system could be changed from one that relies more on competitive position rather than on measures of income.

Success and failure in expert reasoning
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the causes of error in reasoning tasks such as fraud detection. Computer simulations which were designed to violate the two principles of expertise were used with the actual financial statements of two companies. Results indicate that the performance of these computer models was similar to that of auditors who failed to detect fraud. This indicates that failure to perform such tasks could be due to a slip in the reasoning process and not to lack of knowledge about the task.
