Molecular analyses of the intestinal microbiota of chimpanzees in the wild and in captivity
Article Abstract:
The 16S rRNA-based analyses are applied to the intestinal microbiota of chimpanzees in the wild and in captivity in order to estimate their similarities and differences in individual chimpanzees in both locations. Several bacteria such as the Clostridium leptum subgroup bacteria, Lactobacillus gasseri-like bacterium and Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum- or B. catenulatum-like bacteria are found to be common for both wild and captive chimpanzees.

Nutritional significance of the selective ingestion of Albizia zygia gum exudate by wild chimpanzees in Bossou, Guinea
Article Abstract:
The selective ingestion of plant gum exudates by chimpanzees has been frequently observed at various study sites, and at Bossou, Guinea the chimpanzees frequently ingest Albizia zygia gum exudate and a functional explanation for this behavior is lacking. It is found that Albizia zygia exudate can supply sufficient amounts of calcium, manganese, and potassium to fulfill the daily requirements for the minerals in chimpanzees.

Mitochondrial DNA genealogy of chimpanzees in the Nimba Mountains and Bossou, West Africa
Article Abstract:
The genetic relationship of the Bossou and two neighboring populations such as Seringbara and Yeale in the Nimba Mountains is examined by sequencing approximately 605 bp of the mitochondrial DNA control region. A comparison with published sequences from West African chimpanzees indicates that the variants observed in the Bossou and Nimba region are scattered throughout the subspecies.
