Nonverbal counting in humans: the psychophysics of number representation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the hypothesis that humans utilize noisy magnitudes to represent number. Animal paradigms were approximately replicated with humans. Results indicated that adult humans share with nonverbal animals a method of representing number by magnitudes supporting scalar variability. Findings also showed that humans can map from a mental magnitude produced by a nonverbal counting procedure to the corresponding verbal symbol for numerosity.

"Humans and animals"? On saying what we mean
Article Abstract:
Journalists and psychologists have different attitudes toward the relationship of humans with other species of animals. Journalists tend to associate humans with other animals. On the other hand, psychologists would not agree that humans are animals, the theory of evolution notwithstanding. They would rather endorse a marked distinction between animals and humans and continue the use of distinctive language such as humans and animals.
