Psychoanalysis and psychiatric institutions: theoretical and clinical spaces of the Horney approach
Article Abstract:
The relationship between psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Italy is explored, and the clinical use of Karen Horney's theories is described. Psychoanalysis and psychiatry have developed separately and those who practice both may be suspect. Because psychiatry developed through the treatment of mental hospital patients, it could not properly deal with the new type of patient. Karen Horney's approach involves the change from an asylum model of treatment to the territorial model, which aims to improve the patient so he can function better in his own environment.

Postmodernism - feminism and the deconstruction of the feminine: Kristeva and Irigaray
Article Abstract:
There is a marked absence of female voice in Western society, and the same is true with psychoanalytic theory. A number of powerful female personalities in France raised the issue of the absence of female voice in psychoanalysis. The feminist psychoanalytic argument came to the fore in France at the time of the revolution of 1968. Female psychoanalysts like Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigary felt that the new theories of postmodernism provided new openings for the appearance of feminine in the symbolic order.

The 'third step' in feminist psychoanalytic theory toward providing psychological help to women takes into account the differences between gender and difference feminism and also the gender-related complexities experienced by individual women. This step emphasizes the inclusion of postmodernist views in gender feminism to help broaden the understanding of multiple personality and gender effects and to improve effectiveness of psychoanalysis.
